A Brief History of Aromatherapy from Around the Globe

If you mention aromatherapy to a majority of people they immediately think of it being just one of the many new fads that has come to light with the hope of promising relief and a miracle cure for all ills. However, this is far from true. Aromatherapy is no fad.

While aromatherapy can bring relief to a number of conditions and is one of the leading aids for helping with stress related disorders, it has been around for thousands of years. In fact, aromatherapy is actually one of the oldest kinds of holistic medicine used throughout the world. During the prehistoric times they did not’t have the resources that we have today, and there were very little sanitary measures and certainly no drug stores or doctors.

However, people still got sick and this meant they had to find resources of their own and rely on what they had in their surroundings. One of the ways by which they learned during these times were by watching animals; they learned that animals would eat certain herbs and plants while avoiding others.

This is how the basis of aromatherapy started. It was found that not only could the herbs and plants be eaten to relieve many ailments, but they also could be crushed and used as infusions and even their smell brought relief. This was the birth of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy as we know it and practice it today was first given to us by the Egyptians. The Egyptians learned not only were the plants and herbs useful when crushed but also oils could be extracted. This oil was a more potent way of using the flowers and herbs for medicinal remedies.
While the Egyptians were developing their aromatherapy techniques, so were the Chinese. One of the earliest books on aromatherapy dates back to 2,700 BC and lists over 300 plants and herbs and their uses.

However, it was the Greeks who went on to discover that oils extracted from certain flowers were more useful for relaxation purposes while others for more medical reasons. It was the Greeks who also introduced the base of olive oil into which to put the extracted essence. The Romans quickly adopted this from the Greeks, and it was here that the aromatherapy baths were introduced; these baths were then followed by a hot oil massage.

The popularity of aromatics used for a wide range of ills increased, and this led to the importation of exotic spices, flowers, and oils from India, China, and Arabia.

When Europe descended into the dark ages, aromatherapy went with it, as anything that was not’t classed as traditional Western medicine was put into the “Witchcraft” bracket and those who practiced aromatherapy were branded as a witch. Aromatherapy resurfaced again during the Middle Ages when the bubonic plague was prevalent; it was found that the scent from burning cedar and pine would help to fumigate infected enclosures.

When European settlers came to America they were surprised to find that the Native Americans had been using aromatic oils for a long time for a wide variety of uses. Finally, around the 19th century, the value of aromatherapy was truly recognized and traditional medicine started taking aromatherapy seriously.

Today aromatherapy is available to be used in the home, and although a little knowledge and understanding of the herbs and their uses is needed, you don’t have to be an expert to be able to make the remedies for yourself.

In these situations the return on your investment is realized much more quickly.

Dr. Israel Regardie

Israel Regardie, born Francis Israel Regudy(November 17, 1907–March 10, 1985) was one of the 20th century's most significant popularizers of the occult, specifically the legacies of Aleister Crowley and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Israel Regardie was born Israel Regudy in London to Barnet Regudy, a cigarette maker, and his wife, Phoebe Perry, poor orthodox Jewish immigrants from Zhitomir, Russia. His family changed their surname to "Regardie" after a clerical mixup resulted in Israel's brother being enrolled in the British Army under that name. Regardie emigrated with his parents to the United States in August 1921 and settled in Washington, DC. He studied art in Washington, DC and Philadelphia, PA. With a Hebrew tutor he gained a linguistic knowledge which would prove invaluable in his later studies of Hermetic Qabalah. With easy access to the Library of Congress, he read widely and became interested in theosophy, Hindu philosophy and yoga; he also joined the Rosicrucians at around this time.

After reading Part I of Magick (Book 4) by the occultist Aleister Crowley, he initiated a correspondence which led to his return at 21 to the UK at Crowley's invitation to become the latter's secretary in 1928. When the two parted company four years later in 1932, Regardie distanced himself from Crowley personally, but still retained a great deal of respect for his writings.[4] Shortly after this period he published The Tree of Life, a guide to magick, largely derived from Crowley's work, and A Garden of Pomegranates, a primer on Qabalah based on notes he had taken while working for Crowley. Regardie would later write a biography of Crowley, The Eye in the Triangle, and continue to edit and republish Crowley's works up until the 1970s.

Francis I. Regardie, born in London, England, November 17, 1907; died in Sedona, Arizona, March 10, 1985. Came to the United States in August 1921, educated in Washington D.C. and studied art in school in Washington and Philadelphia. Returned to Europe in 1928 at the invitation of Aleister Crowley to work as his secretary and study with him. Returned to London as secretary to Thomas Burke 1932-34, and during that time wrote A Garden of Pomegranates and The Tree of Life.

In 1934 he was invited to join the Order of the Golden Dawn, Stella Matutina Temple, during which time he wrote The Middle Pillar and The Art of True Healing, and did the basic work for The Philosopher's Stone.

Returning to the United States in 1937 he entered Chiropractic College in New York, Graduating in 1941, and published The Golden Dawn. Served in the U.S. Army 1942-1945, and then moved to Los Angeles where he opened a chiropractic practice and taught psychiatry. Upon retirement in 1981, he moved to Sedona.

During his lifetime, he studied psychoanalysis with Dr. E. Clegg and Dr. J. L. Bendit, and later studied psychotherapy under Dr. Nandor Fodor. His training encompassed Freudian, Jungian and Reichian methods.

What is essential though, with the candle making craft is that you know exactly how to make a professional looking product and how to market it. Beautiful candles sell themselves, so concentrate on color, design and on quality candle fragrances.

Candles are ideal to take to markets, run party plans with or sell online and once you are confident you will be able to look for specialty shops to stock your products if that is what you want.

What you will need to get started is the right instructions to make sure that you attack this hobby in the right way. Candle designs change according to decor changes, as do most other art forms and once you know the basic techniques to make candles, you won't find it too difficult to keep abreast of the latest trends and change your designs to suit

Once you are happy with having learned some good techniques for candle making you can go ahead and start your business. Before setting about buying wax and making stock, research your market and know where you are going to sell your product. There are many ways and places to sell, but you need to research this so that you are making candles to suit your market.

Say you are selling at a market where there are a lot of tourists coming through it would be a good idea to have a 'boxed range' so that tourists can buy to take home as a holiday gift. Using your imagination in this way your research will help you decide exactly where to place your product in the market.

When tranquility has reached its limit, there is a return to movement. Movement and tranquility, in alteration, become each the source of the other. The distinction between the yin and yang is determined and the two forms (that is, the yin and yang) stand revealed. By the transformations of the yang and the union of the yin, the 5 elements (Qi) of water, fire, wood, metal and earth are produced. These 5 Qi become diffused, which creates harmony. Hypnosis, Conversational Hypnosis and Covert Persuasion - I Have Been Asked NOT to Share by several I know. Why? Probably because it will decrease their "influence" or so they think.

Like many professions a little knowledge is power and often the hypnotist will rely on people knowing very little about what he is actually doing, blind faith or acceptance is a powerful tool. So let's share some facts and perhaps destroy some myths?

Hypnosis Safe? I don't think so

Well I suppose they would say that- They being the people who claim to be an expert. There in lies the problem. In the absence of a clear definition of hypnosis it is difficult to claim anyone is an expert.

A major issue is that everyone is inherently different. Having spent five minutes with a subject perhaps a hypnotist is not in any position to decide whether or not it is actually safe to hypnotize someone. A problem can occur when actually relaxing someone into the hypnotic state. Many have simply never relaxed in such a way for years, perhaps even for ever.

When their mind turns away from dealing with day to day issues, memories pushed to the back of their mind often surface and result in distress or perhaps even fixations.

You can Hypnotize anyone.

Now this one has to be true. Anyone who has driven a car on a long journey has been hypnotized. Remember the last time you did it? You were basically on autopilot, concentrating on the job in hand but your mind wandering elsewhere.

It is possible to be hypnotized without your knowledge

Well I suspect this is true depending on your definition of hypnosis. You can certainly be influenced by means of indirect suggestions and signals. Several them park operators make use of odor emitters to simulate peoples taste buds making them hungry in the immediate vicinity of fast food outlets.

Covert Persuasion would perhaps be a better description of this method. TV advertising is very good at it and it is practically the basis of all successful sales systems.

"This book has a controversial backstory which is part of the mythology of anti-Freemasonry. 'Captain' William Morgan, the author, was a disappointed Freemason in Batavia, New York. Rejected by the local lodge, he announced that he was going to publish a work exposing Masonic rituals and secrets. Shortly before publication in 1826, he disappeared, and three Masons were later convicted of kidnapping him. Although claims were made that Morgan had been murdered, some say that he was forced to leave the US. Either way, it was good publicity for this book, which was published in 1827, but bad for the Masons. The incident led to widespread protests against Freemasons in the US, and eventually an anti-Masonic Party, which at its height in 1832 got seven electoral votes for William Wirt for President.

So why read this book? Stripped of the fevered historical background, and ignoring the publisher's antimasonic introduction, this becomes simply one of the first published accounts of US Freemasonry in the early 19th century. It seems accurate, based on other published Monitors, such as Ducan's. At this perspective, Illustrations is no more offensive than Robert's Rules of Order, although it makes more interesting reading..."

Opening the Lodge

A Description of the Ceremonies used in opening a
Lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons; which is the
same in all upper degrees, with the exception
of the difference in the signs, due-guards,
grips, pass-grips, words and their several
names; all of which will be
given and explained in their
proper places as the
work progresses.

One rap calls the lodge to order—one calls up the Junior and Senior Deacons—two raps call up all the subordinate officers, and three, all the members of the lodge.

The Master having called the lodge to order, and the officers all seated, the Master says to the Junior Warden, 'Brother Junior, are they all Entered Apprentice Masons in the south?'

Ans. 'They are, Worshipful.'

Master to the Senior Warden, 'Brother Senior, are they all Entered Apprentice Masons in the west?'

Ans. 'They are, Worshipful.'

The Master then says, 'They are, in the east,' at the same time he gives a rap with the common gavel or mallet, which calls up both Deacons.

Master to Junior Deacon, 'Brother Junior, the first care of a Mason?'

Ans. 'To see the lodge tyled, Worshipful.'

Master to Junior Deacon, 'Attend to that part of your duty, and inform the Tyler that we are about to open a lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons, and direct him to tyle accordingly.' The Junior Deacon then steps to the door and gives three raps, which are answered by three raps from without; the Junior Deacon then gives one, which is also answered by the Tyler with one; the door is then partly opened and the Junior Deacon delivers his message, and resumes his situation and says, 'The door is tyled, Worshipful.' (at the same time giving the due-guard, which is never omitted when the Master is addressed.)

The Master to Junior Deacon, 'Brother, by whom?'

Ans. 'By a Master Mason without the door, armed with the proper implement of his office.'

Master to Junior Deacon, 'His duty there?'

Ans. 'To keep off all cowans and eaves-droppers, see that none pass or repass without permission from the Master.' (Some say without permission from the chair.)

Master to Junior Deacon, 'Brother Junior, your place in the lodge?'

Ans. 'At the right hand of the Senior Warden in the west.'

Master to Junior Deacon, 'Your business there, Brother Junior?'

Ans. 'To wait on the Worshipful Master and Wardens, act as their proxy in the active duties of the lodge, and take charge of the door.'

Master to Junior Deacon, 'The Senior Deacon's place in the lodge?'

Ans. 'At the right hand of the Worshipful Master in the east.' [The Master, while asking the last questions gives two raps, which call up all the subordinate officers.]

Master to Senior Deacon, 'Your duty there, Brother Senior?'

Ans. 'To wait on the Worshipful Master and Wardens, act as their proxy in the active duties of the lodge, attend to the preparation and introduction of candidates, and welcome and clothe all visiting Brethren. [i.e., furnish them with an apron.]

Master to Senior Deacon, 'The Secretary's place in the lodge, Brother Senior?'

Ans. 'At the left hand of the Worshipful Master in the east.'

Master to the Secretary, 'Your duty there, Brother Secretary?'

Ans. 'The better to observe the Worshipful Master's will and pleasure, record the proceedings of the lodge; transmit a copy of the same to the Grand Lodge, if required; receive all moneys and money bills from the hands of the Brethren, pay them over to the Treasurer, and take his receipt for the same.'

The Master to the Secretary, 'The Treasurer's place in the lodge?'

Ans. 'At the right hand of the Worshipful Master.'

Master to Treasurer, 'Your duty there, Brother Treasurer?'

Ans. 'Duly to observe the Worshipful Master's will and pleasure; receive all moneys and money bills from the hands of the Secretary; keep a just and true account of the same; pay them out by order of the Worshipful Master and consent of the Brethren.'

The Master to the Treasurer, "The Junior Warden's place in the lodge, Brother Treasurer?'

Ans. 'In the south, Worshipful.'

Master to Junior Warden, 'Your business there, Brother Junior?'

Ans. 'As the sun in the south at high meridian is the beauty and glory of the day, so stands the Junior Warden in the south, the better to observe the time, call the crafts from labor to refreshment, superintend them during the hours thereof, see that none convert the hours of refreshment into that of intemperance or excess; and call them out again in due season, that the Worshipful Master may have honor, and they profit and pleasure thereby.'

Master to the Junior Warden, 'The Senior Warden's place in the lodge?'

Ans. 'In the west, Worshipful.'

Master to Senior Warden, 'Your duty there, Brother Senior?'

Ans. 'As the sun sets in the west to close the day, so stands the Senior Warden in the west to assist the Worshipful Master in opening his lodge, take care of the jewels and implements, see that none be lost, pay the craft their wages, if any be due, and see that none go away dissatisfied.'

Master to the Senior Warden, 'The Master's place in the lodge?'

Ans. 'In the east, Worshipful.'

Master to the Senior Warden, 'His duty there?'

Ans. 'As the sun rises in the east to open and adorn the day, so presides the Worshipful Master in the east to open and adorn his lodge, set his crafts to work with good and wholesome laws, or cause the same to be done.' The Master now gives three raps, when all the brethren rise, and the Master taking off his hat, proceeds as follows: In like manner so do I, strictly forbidding all profane language, private committees, or any other disorderly conduct whereby the peace and harmony of this lodge may be interrupted while engaged in its lawful pursuits, under no less penalty than the by-laws, or such penalty as the majority of the Brethren present may see fit to inflict. Brethren, attend to giving the signs.' [Here lodges differ very much. In some they declare the lodge opened as follows, before they give the signs:]

The Master (all the Brethren imitating him) extends his left arm from his body so as to form an angle of about forty-five degrees, and holds his right hand transversely across his left, the palms thereof about one inch apart. This is called the Due Guard, and alludes to the position a Candidate's hands are placed in when he takes the obligation of an Entered Apprentice Mason. The Master then draws his right hand across his throat, the hand open, with the thumb next to his throat, and drops it down by his side. This is called the penal sign of an Entered Apprentice Mason, (many call it sign) and alludes to the penalty of the obligation. (See obligation.) The Master Then declares the lodge opened in the following manner: 'I vow declare this lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons duly opened for dispatch of business.' The Senior Warden declares it to the Junior Warden, and he to the Brethren. 'Come, Brethren, let us pray.'—One of the following prayers is used:

Most holy and glorious God! the great architect of the Universe; the giver of all good gifts and graces: Thou hast promised that 'Where two or three are gathered together in thy name, thou wilt be in the midst of them and bless them.' In thy name we assemble, most humbly beseeching thee to bless us in all our undertakings; that we may know and serve thee aright, and that all our actions may tend to thy glory and our advancement in knowledge and virtue. And we beseech thee, O Lord God, to bless our present assembling; and to illuminate our minds through the influence of the Son of Righteousness, that we may walk in the light of thy countenance; and when the trials of our probationary state are over, be admitted into the temple, not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Amen. So mote it be.

Another prayer, as often used at opening as closing:

Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity; it is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard, that went down to the skirts of his garment; as the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion, for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life forever more. Amen. So mote it be.

The lodge being now open and ready to proceed to business, the Master directs the Secretary to read the minutes of the last meeting, which naturally brings to view the business of the present.

Developing Your Intuition

Exercises to Develop Your Intuition

Intuition is the space between your thoughts, when the mind lets go and surrenders to the present moment. There are 7 steps that you can use to strengthen and exercise your intuition.

1. Your intellect! Thoughts are the starting point as everything begins with thought. Pay attention and listen to what you are saying and thinking.

2. Imagination. Imagination plays a key role in nearly everything we do. It is the ability to picture things in our head, things that are not visible around us. Visual symbols and shapes are vital to stimulating inner growth. Imagination is the gateway to awareness.

3. Trusting your gut. Have you noticed that our culture does not value intuition? They value logic and reasoning and so we loose our connection to intuition and a very young age. We have been conditioned to look outside for the answers. Do you realize that you give away your power to people you think have all the answers. For example, doctors and healers may have all the information you need and it may be right but we should be open to taking it in and ask if this feels right for us. Nobody knows what's true for you as well as you know in your soul.

4. Awareness - This simply means living your life consciously. When we do this and give full attention to each and every moment in our life, we begin to glow in our own light and truth.

5. Meditation- This is when the body can reduce stress and concentration becomes easier and more effective. Your ability to learn expands and you enhance your creative powers. You also achieve an overall feeling of well being. Remember to really hear your inner voice you have to learn to be silent.

6. Dreams- They are your greatest source of self help. They can express and teach creativity, reinforce learning, work on problems, and open the door to deeper spirituality. Dreams are therapeutic and healing.

7. Practice- Practice-Practice... Think of intuition as a muscle that must be used to gain strength. So let's do some exercises!

Exercise 1

Take a look at what you are wearing right now. Do you know what your clothes may be telling you? As I mentioned in article two, your clothes, especially the colors will always tell you something about the energy that you may need at this time in your life.

• Are you listless and tired?

• Are your clothes and colors reflecting that?

• What color do you think you could put on to change your energy to something different?

• What is your intuition telling you about how you look and feel right now? Are you willing to listen to it?

• Is there someone close by? If so, look at what they are wearing and ask your intuitive self to give you some feedback on what you see.

Part 2. Think of a question that you want an answer to. For ex: Will it rain in your city before the next snowfall? Pretend that the color of the blouse/shirt you are wearing is the answer to the question OR any other object you want to use.

• Describe the color, any memories you may have associated with it, what the color means to you in this moment and how your perception of the color has changed during this exercise.

• Simply allow yourself to notice images, symbols and other impressions. Do you feel the color would mean a yes or a no to you right now?

Pretending and being able to make things up are very important skills to work on in gaining control of your intuition. Intuition is really just information gathering. Don't try to figure everything out.

Exercise 2

Do you ever notice animals or birds when driving or sitting outside? Did you ever stop and ask yourself why they suddenly came into your line of vision & what they could mean?

Here are some common meanings that you may want to consider next time an animal comes into your line of vision or space. What is the first word that comes into your mind when you read the words below? Do they fit with the ones I have given or did your word feel better to you?

Dogs- friendship, loyalty, unconditional love

Cats- independence, freedom, march to your own drums

Rabbits- timid, shy, fertility, abundance, growth

Crows- Spiritual laws, intelligence

Are you starting to realize that when we use our intuition we are really operating without a safety net? There is no logic, common sense to this. Know that what you sense, feel, perceive and dream has some meaning. There is always a reason we notice what we do and that we don't notice everything else.

The same object viewed by two people can mean two very different things. Just allow your meanings of the symbols to come to you, and this may take time. It also takes an open mind, even if at first you have to pretend that the symbols are significant. Allow things to be meaningful and they become meaningful.

Exercise 3

Start an intuition notebook and write your experiences in a book. Write on how some daily or other impressions you had may have answered your question.

• Practice on things like; who is on the other line when the phone rings?

• Which elevator will arrive first?

• Will the next traffic light be green, red or yellow?

• Focus on a call you would like to receive from someone and you will suddenly hear from them!

• If the doorbell rings and you're not expecting anyone, who do you think it is?

You'll be amazed at how accurate your "guesses " can be.

As little children we had no trouble pretending. Pretending often precedes faith and before we know it, we no longer need to pretend.

If we insist on our experience of the world making sense, we will deprive ourselves of valuable intuitive data. You must be willing to make mistakes. When you follow your intuition you will gain a feeling of power and energy and more importantly a wonderful spiritual connectedness to all things in your life.

The Thoth Tarot Deck

The Thoth Tarot Deck was a tarot deck developed by the English occultist Aleister Crowley and illustrated on his instructions by Lady Frieda Harris. Aleister Crowley called the Thoth tarot deck, the book of Thoth and claimed that the deck reflected the wisdom of the ancient Egyptian book of Thoth. The tarot card descriptions found on the Thoth Tarot deck are different in symbolism and imagery compared to other standard tarot card decks.

Thoth is considered one of the most important deities of the ancient Egyptian pantheon. He is known as the God with the head of an ibis. He is the heart and tongue of the all-powerful Egyptian Sun God Ra. He translated the will of Ra into speech and is the divine communicator of Egyptian mythology. He was the scribe of the Gods and was called the God of Writing. The book of Thoth is used for divination through tarot cards. The tarot card descriptions on the Thoth deck are reflections of the great knowledge of the ancient Egyptians.

A cult of Thoth grew during the last years of the Egyptian civilization who claimed to predict the future through occult divination. Aleister Crowley claims that the Thoth tarot deck developed by him was based on the tarot card descriptions followed by the cult of Thoth. He developed the deck between 1938 and 1943. He commissioned Lady Frieda Harris to illustrate the deck based on his visions and based on the ancient Egyptian book of Thoth papyrus by Jasnow and Zauzich. It took five years to develop the deck because Crowley wanted the images to reflect different disciplines including science and philosophy.

The tarot card descriptions in the Crowley Thoth tarot deck are different from the Rider Waite and other standard tarot card decks. The Major Arcana or trump cards are 21 in number and consist of the fool, the Magician or Magus, the high Priestess, the Emperor, the Empress, the Hierophant, the lovers, the chariot, Adjustment, the hermit, the wheel of fortune, lust, the hanged man, death, art, devil, tower, star, moon, sun, aeon and the universe. Court cards in the Thoth minor Arcana deck are the prince, the princess, queen and the knight. While the suite of cups, disks, swords and wands remain the same, they are illustrated with an Egyptian hieroglyphic style. The pips of the minor Arcana in the Thoth deck relate to the signs of the zodiac with the aces depicting the root of the element they represent. Each pip card in each suite has an attribute.

The wand suite relates to the fire signs of the zodiac. The ace represents the root of the fire element 2 dominions, 3 virtues, 4 completion, 5 strife, 6 victory, 7valor, 8 swiftness, 9 strength and 10 oppression.

The cup suite represents the water signs of the zodiac. The ace represents the root of the water element, 2 love,3 abundance, 4 luxury, 5 disappointment, 6 pleasure, 7 debauchery, 8 indolence, 9 happiness and 10 safety.

The sword suite represents the air signs of the zodiac. The ace represents the root of the air element 2 peace, 3 sorrow, 4 truces, 5 defeats, 6 science, 7 futility, 8 interference, 9 cruelty and 10 ruin.

The disks suite represents the earth signs of the zodiac. The ace is the root of the earth element, 2 change, 3 work, 4 power, 5 worry, 6 success, 7 failure, 8 prudence, 9 gain and 10 wealth.

The Thoth tarot deck reflects the tarot card descriptions that formed the visions of Aleister Crowley on a visit to Egypt. Many diviners have found great merit in predicting the future using the Thoth Tarot deck.
